Crisis: Greece; state workers, teachers continue strikesOther sectors protest against government policies24 Sep 13 Laborstart (ANSAmed) - ATHENS - Another difficult week for the Greek government kicked off on Monday as a new wave of strikes is scheduled in the next few days against austerity measures involving the public administration. Adedy, one of Greece's two largest unions representing public employees, has called a 48-hour strike on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 24-25. Moreover, Adedy and representatives of Gsee, Greece's other top union representing private sector workers, are trying to turn tomorrow's protest into a general strike with a joint demonstration scheduled in Klathmonos square in downtown Athens. The executive committee of Gsee is meeting on Monday morning at 11 am local time to decide on the issue. Also on Tuesday, at 6 pm, an anti-Fascist demonstration has been scheduled in Syntagma square, in front of Parliament. The event has been organized jointly by the country's unions to protest against the recent murder of a young left-wing musician by a member of neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn. Meanwhile a 48-hour strike starting on Monday has been called by the Federation of middle and high school teachers (Olme), also followed by employees of welfare and local authorities, who are expected to gather at 10.30 am in front of the ministry of administrative reform to protest. Elementary school teachers will participate in the 48-hour strike called by Adedy while on Monday the board of their federation (Doe) has called a three-hour walkout to sponsor participation in the demonstration organized by Olme. The second leg of a five-day strike also starts on Monday, when the country's university employees will protest against the lay-off of 1,500 administration workers.(ANSAmed). |
