Nigeria: Teachers Strike - NUT, Ekiti Govt Meeting Deadlocked

Ado Ekiti — As the meeting of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT and Ekiti State Government over the payment of 27.5 per cent peculiar allowance was at the weekend deadlocked, the state government has appealed to the striking workers to call off their two weeks old industrial action.

Vanguard gathered that the state government's series of meetings with the leadership of the union in the state with a view to resolving the ongoing industrial action was to no avail until the government sought the intervention of the national president of the union, Chief Michael Olukoya.

The meeting presided over by the state governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi could not achieve its desired result, as the state government was said to have offered the teachers 15 per cent professional allowance pledging to pay the remaining 12.5 per cent when the finances of the state government improved

Olukoya was said to have insisted that the union was not ready to shift ground on its request, more so, when the present Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN-led government used to pay the allowance to the teachers for about eight consecutive years.

Meanwhile ,the state government has pleaded with the striking teachers in the state to call off the strike in the interest of the state.
