Barapukuria power plant workers strike

Dinajpur, Apr 10 (bdnews24.com)—Workers of Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant are on a wildcat strike over 'barring one of their leaders from joining work'.

Over 250 workers enforced the stoppage around 9:15am on Sunday, the authorities said.

Power generation was, however, continuing uninterrupted, plant's chief engineer Abu Taher told bdnews24.com at noon.

The workers said Workers-Employees Union president Nuruzzaman was not allowed to work as he had 'pressed the authorities to take their demand for job regularisation up with the Power Development Board'.

Nuruzzaman said he, along with several workers, on Saturday had asked the chief engineer why they had missed the Apr 7 deadline to submit papers on their job regularisation to the PDB.

The authorities had earlier given the cut-off date, he said and alleged that the chief engineer had assaulted and driven him out of the office on Saturday.

Taher denied the allegation. He said: "They had to stop Nuruzzaman joining work for the sake of security as he had threatened us [plant management] with dire consequences on Saturday".

He also said they were trying to resolve the crisis.
