Greece braced for a week of strike action14 Dec 10 Laborstart Public transport in Greece has ground to a halt as workers in the debt laden country begin a week of industrial action in protest over government austerity measures. A general strike is planned for Wednesday and bank workers will stage a 48-hour walkout tomorrow. Air traffic controllers have warned passengers that no flights will operate in or out of Greece for 24 hours, beginning Wednesday. The week of strikes coincide with parliamentary votes on a number of belt-tightening measures. The Greek government received a 110-billion-euro bailout from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, in order to drag the country out of a huge debt hole that has rocked the euro zone. |
