Steel strike in Germany could get worse

Steelworkers in Germany have called for more strike action for higher wages.

Six hundred workers walked out at ThyssenKrupp in the western German industrial city of Duisburg last week, when short term contract employees said they wanted the same pay as full time employees.

The IG Metall union said 11,500 of its members throughout the were on strike by Friday.

The union has said it is hoping employers will make an offer for a six percent rise.

But the German steel industry employers’ association has rejected the workers’ demands due to production being lower than in previous years due to economic factors.
