MANDYA: The indefinite hunger strike by the members of the district non-clinical workers union attached to the Mandya Institute of Medical Scinces (MIMS) demanding reinstatement of dismissed workers turned violent on Tuesday with police caning the protesters and arresting around 50 persons.

Tense situation was created when the protesters tried to lay siege to the deputy commissioner Jaffer's house. The police intervened and asked the protesters to leave the place.

When they did not relent, the police used cane and bundled them into vans. Later, the protesters were produced before the court. The court refused to entertain their bail applications and the protesters were sent to judicial custody.
