DJ Neves-Corvo Copper Union Plans To Strike May 5-12 - LundinAndrea Hotter, Dow Jones Newswires 21 Apr 10 Laborstart The union representing workers at the Neves-Corvo copper mine in Portugal has notified the mine's owner that workers plan to strike from May 5-12, Lundin Mining Corp. (LUN.T) said Tuesday. "It is unclear what the adherence will be to this action and further details will be advised when available," Lundin added. The mine produced around 89,000 metric tons of copper metal contained in 2008. The mine, which is located in the western part of the Iberian Pyrite Belt that stretches through southern Spain into Portugal, also produces zinc. This isn't the first stoppage of the year--in February, underground workers at the mine begun two-hour strikes over pay at the start of every shift, but the company said it continued to produce concentrate from stockpiles. At the time, Lundin's management rejected a 17% base-pay increase requested by the workers, noting that employees were last month granted increases "well in excess of inflation and well above the national average." |
