Govt urges varsity teachers to suspend strikeBunmi Awolusi 03 Sep 09 Laborstart The Federal Government last night begged university teachers to suspend their strike for the resumption of talks on their demands. The government had backed out of the talks a few weeks ago, asking the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to negotiate with governing councils of universities. Education Minister Sam Egwu said in Abuja that the government’s earlier action followed the hard line posture of ASUU. He appealed that the strike be suspended, even if temporarily, to enable the parties return to the negotiating table. Egwu reeled out some of the government’s interventions in the education sector to include a boost in budgetary allocation of N210.5 billion last year alone, adding that N224.7 billion was voted for this year. |
