Organised labour vehemently opposes the proposed cut in workers' contributions to the social security fund, Inchuan Khankham, a member of the Social Security Board, said yesterday.

Mr Inchuan said the reduction, which is being suggested as a way to offset the economic slump, is unlikely to bring any benefits to laid-off employees.

Instead, a cut would adversely affect the integrity and the credit of the social security fund over the long term.

The Social Security Office should focus on extending the benefit period for workers instead of cutting contributions.

Mr Inchuan said he will demand an explanation from the board if it accepts the proposal for consideration.

"The social security fund is meaningful to the life of employees. I want the government to help sustain the fund."

Labour Minister Paitoon Kaewthong said the Social Security Board would meet today to look at measures to help employers and workers, including cutting their social security fund contributions.
